Abstract

The Relative Age Effect (RAE) is the age difference between athletes of the same category that causes a disadvantage to those born in the last months of the year when compared to those born in the first months. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the existence of RAE in handball student-athletes of both sexes, who competed in the 2021 Mato Grosso Games. The sample consisted of 237 student-athletes from category A (15 to 17 years old), 97 females and 140 males, who participated in the School Games and Student Games of Mato Grosso National Teams in 2021. Significance analyses by quartile were performed using the chi-square (x²) and Bonferroni correction. The analytical result of the student-athletes' dates of birth indicated a greater proportion of those born in the second quarter compared to those born in the fourth quarter of the year. It is concluded that RAE was present in male handball, but not in female handball.
