Abstract

This narrative review aimed to investigate the factors associated with burnout syndrome in college athletes. Five databases were searched: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Only primary studies involving the assessment of psychological and/or physiological factors associated with burnout were included. A total of 35 studies, involving 11,243 college athletes, were considered eligible for inclusion. Based on the analysis of the main clusters generated by a co-occurrence network procedure, two topics with the key variables associated with burnout were defined: 1) burnout, motivation, basic psychological needs, and social support; and 2) burnout, perfectionism, coping, and coach behavior. The studies presented in this narrative review form a body of evidence that consolidates burnout as a concern in the college sports environment, as the syndrome can negatively impact both the performance and mental health of college athletes.
