Abstract

This study investigated the correspondence between what is prescribed, what is reported, what is effectively performed, and the role of motivation in male and female resistance training practitioners, in two specific resistance exercises: the Leg Press 45º and the Seated Cable Row. Participants [mean (±SD)] included seven men [28.0 (8.5) years; 81.0 (10.2) kg; 176.3 (9.2) cm] and six women [24.8 (7.7) years; 61.7 (7.2) kg; 162.2 (2.8) cm]. Levels of motivation and self-determination (BREQ-2) were analyzed among individuals aiming for muscle hypertrophy, along with their ability to perform the exercises and the effect of intensity on variables such as number of sets, repetitions, total volume, time under tension, and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Participants described their usual training routines for the Leg Press 45º and the Seated Cable Row, and it was verified whether they were able to perform the exercises as reported. After estimating their one-repetition maximum (1-RM), the effect of training intensity corresponding to 85% of 1-RM on the investigated variables was analyzed. In general, both men and women showed motivation levels regulated by identified and intrinsic forms, with men being more self-determined than women. Both sexes were able to perform their usual training structure as verbalized. Men and women usually train the Leg Press 45º with a total volume similar to that obtained at 85% of 1-RM. However, only women, in their usual routines, performed the Seated Cable Row with a total volume lower than what would be possible at a higher relative intensity (85% of 1-RM). It is concluded that both men and women demonstrate intrinsic motivation toward resistance training and follow their trainers’ guidance. The observed training volume may be similar to or lower than that performed at higher intensities, depending on the exercise and the practitioner's sex.
