Abstract

This essay presents reflections inspired by artworks in which the author identifies formal interventions against a presumed authority, while the work itself—explicitly or implicitly—refuses to signify Blackness in prescribed ways. Denise Ferreira da Silva’s interest lies in movements—rebellious formal gestures—that confront the notion organizing post-Enlightenment representation (cultural difference, to name it) in its historical and scientific figurations. Each of these notes also constitutes an experiment, testing a way of approaching art. From reading the work, I derive an "uncategorizable" term—a possible descriptor under which such interventions can be studied collectively. Another way to describe what I do in this essay is through a call-and-response structure, as the author’s engagement with each artist moves with, and stems from, what they invite me to think about.
