Abstract

Among the factors that can influence motor development, gender appears to be one of the most prominent. However, it is still not clear how this affects different components of motor performance. The aim of this study was to compare motor performance of children and adolescents between genders. Participants underwent tests of speed, agility, lower limb strength, and coordination, comprising 31 children aged between eleven and fourteen years who were attending physical education classes. The results indicated that boys performed better in the tests: bipodal tapping (p=0.01), standing long jump (p=0.05), countermovement jump (p=0.04), speed (p=0.05), and agility (p=0.01), but similar performance in single-leg tapping. A large portion of the students were below the expected performance level according to Proesp. It is concluded that boys demonstrate better performance compared to girls, which may be due to the onset of puberty or behavioral factors such as motivation, participation, and engagement in physical education classes.
