Abstract

In this study we intend to characterize the perceptions of elementary teachers about Physical Education, in the Portuguese case. The nature of personal experiences and experiences in the area of Physical and Sports Activities, the training of teachers, the role of a specialist teacher, educational purposes of the Physical Education were fundamental data for its contextualization. The data collection through semi-directive individual interviews was carried out to the entire faculty (8 teachers) of a school of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education in the municipality of Aveiro. The results indicate a great proximity to the literature analyzed, but from these also emerged new factors that contribute to the change in teachers' perceptions of the area. We can conclude that teachers recognize their professional weaknesses, which can sometimes elicit the support of external agents who are not always properly qualified to exercise a good pedagogical practice. At the same time, we identified that many teachers still see Physical Education exclusively as a factor for promoting better health of their students or an instrument to develop pleasure through practice of physical and sports activities.
