Abstract

The promotion of equity and inclusion is a global priority. In this context, the shortage of research that investigates specific demands, such as those of LGBTQIAPN+ black population living in urban occupations, is especially meaningful, considering the complexities of the intersection of factors that shape these people’s health experiences. The objective of this study was to analyze health necessities of  LGBTQIAPN+ black population living in urban occupations. Additionally, it was intended to reflect on how data collected in this context may affect public policies. To do so, the complexities of the intersectionality of gender and race and its relationship with social mechanisms of care were investigated. Based on a qualitative approach, this study included ethnographic insertion and the conduction of semi structured individual interviews with four residents of an urban occupation in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. For data analysis, reflexive thematic analysis (TA) was adopted as the theoretical and methodological framework. From a bottom-up analysis of the data, TA allowed the identification of four main themes: occupation as housing; socioeconomic vulnerability; gender, sexuality, and race; and public policies. Each theme generated the identification of subthemes of analytical character, which are related to the occupation residents’ mental health. This study may contribute to strengthen and qualify research approaches and statistic surveys that involve communities in irregular housing situations, as well as to promote the visibility of themes related to gender, race, and health in an intersectional perspective.
