Biometry of arboreal species in forest restoration areas in Southern Brazil

ABSTRACT: Due to increasing environmental degradation, it is necessary to deepen the knowledge about the silvicultural behaviour of native species for forest restoration. This work analysed the silvicultural development of 10 species, 3 pioneer, Mimosa bimucronata, Senna multijuga, Schizolobium parahyba, and 7 initials secondary Myrsine coriacea, Inga edulis, Inga marginata, Inga laurina, Alchornea glandulos, Citharexylum myrianthum and Hieronyma alchorneoides, in rows. In 2005 a planting was carried out to restore pasture degraded areas in Guaricica Nature Reserve, Antonina-PR. After 14 years, a forest census was conducted to assess biometric variables: stem number (nf), stem quality (qf), stem health (sf), canopy quality (qc), percentage of light received by the canopy (L%), sociological position (ps), circumference at breast height (CAP), commercial height (Hc), total height (H) and volume (V). The treatments provided differences in nf, qf and L%.  A. glandulosa, I. edulis, M. bimucronata and S. multijuga showed the best performance of CAP, H and V. The species had relatively low silvicultural performance in the biometric variables compared to other regionally studies, however, these species have potential for restoration projects in degraded pasture areas in the edaphoclimatic conditions of coastal paranaense plain areas.

Keywords: Ombrophilous Dense Forest; high plantation; survival; native species.
