In the Brazilian public realm, we have registered several problems related to the contracting, inspection, and execution processes of building projects and construction, denoting the need for improvements in these services management. The Architecture and Engineering (A&E) enterprises using Building Information Modeling (BIM) can contribute to the design precision and compatibility, the technical documentation and budget speed, the construction’s quality, and management, in addition to a more efficient operation. This paper aims to diagnose the panorama knowledge absorption in BIM by municipal management in the Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The methodology was employed in three stages: criteria definition for classifying the BIM absorption phase in municipal departments, preparation of a structured questionnaire, data collection and data analysis related to the performance profiles of each department. The results show that the absorption of BIM in the municipal departments where the execution of civil construction and infrastructure projects and construction are developed, contracted, or supervised is incipient, as 79% of respondents declared that they do not use it. In contrast, the departments that use BIM apply it in isolation or pilot projects, for the most part, applying it in the planning, design, and budgeting stages. The results provide a diagnosis of BIM use at the municipal level and highlight the need to plan the BIM incorporation in the construction processes, in addition to supporting public policies that aim to reduce the barriers to its implementation.
