Abstract

This article aims to demonstrate the agency of discourses on emotions in the exercise of elderly care work. This is an ethnographic study carried out in a Catholic community center for the elderly in the city of Niterói/RJ, in the years 2017/2018. The results obtained point to the centrality of the discourses on the moral feeling “love”, as well as to the fact that this discourse produces moral conditions that are read as adequate, in this context, for the practice of care. Thus, it is concluded that this discourse is central to the meaning of caring for the elderly as work.
