This article seeks to explore, initially, the place of myth among the Mẽbêngôkre, as well as the role exercised over the culture of the people. It brings a comparative approach of the myth Mẽbêngôkre entitled Kubẽ Brire, which in a free translation means “frog man or enemy similar to frog”, with versions documented by Curt Nimuendaju (1986) and Anton Lukesch (1976). It sought to highlight historical aspects present in such narratives that show, in addition to the processes of origin and acquisition of cultural goods allocated to the material heritage of the Mẽbêngôkre, colonial clashes and interethnic and territorial conflicts.
Keywords: Mythical narratives; Historicity Mẽbêngôkre; Indigenous Agency.
