Abstract

Valparaíso was recognized by UNESCO in 2003 as part of the heritage sites of humanity. However, this international recognition reveals important problems in the management plan, and most worrying thing, it shows a significant disaffection on the part of the population with its heritage. Nevertheless, in the Playa Ancha hill and from a social movement that shows an important identification with its cultural heritage, a very different situation can be observed. In this way, from a qualitative research based on community discussion groups, we were able to conclude that what allows us to configure this favorable predisposition towards cultural heritage, unlike other areas of the city, is due to a social appropriation of the notion of heritage that is based on collective identities, an imbrication to the neighborhood and a resignified memory in the present time. A different idea from the traditional conception that privileges architectural or monumental considerations.
