Abstract

This essay examines fear and hatred towards homosexuals during the early years of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Brazil. The aim is to understand how these sentiments influenced perceptions and experiences of homosexuality. The study is based on a theoretical dialogue with authors in emotion studies, such as Ahmed (2001; 2004; 2003), Bourke (2003; 2005), Cook (2017), and Gil (2020). Findings reveal that fear and hatred reshaped social relations and self-perceptions among homosexuals, highlighting the complexity of the pandemic's psychological and social impact.
