Integrated fire management and its impacts on soil microorganisms in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park
ABSTRACT: Integrated Fire Management (IFM) has emerged as a promising tool for wildfire prevention and ecosystem management in protected areas. The Chapada dos Guimarães National Park (MT) adopts IFM as a strategy in its management plan. This study evaluated bioindicators of soil health and quality under IFM in the Mato Grosso Cerrado by monitoring soil microorganisms, including microbial biomass, basal respiration, and glomalin fractions, across four treatments: immediately after burning (MIF1 and MIF2), one year after burning (MIF1A), and an unburned control area (SMIF). The results indicated that microbial communities exhibited resilience, recovering their biomass and activity. Within the scope of this study, prescribed burns did not negatively affect soil microbiological activity; however, further studies are essential to understand the potential long-term impacts on biodiversity and soil dynamics.
Keywords: forest fire; bioindicators; soil health; soil quality; conservation.
