This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the population density, viability, and structural stability of natural regeneration in leading forest species (Pinus sylvestris, Quercus robur, Acer platanoides) in the Left-Bank Polissia of Ukraine. The research focused on four forest formations: Pineta sylvestris, Querceta roboris, Betuleta pendulae, and Populeta tremulae. Field surveys used stratified random sampling and elemental accounting of self-seeding cohorts. Key environmental factors influencing cohort conditions included soil water regime, nitrogen content, carbonates, habitat illumination, and thermal regime. The study revealed how cohort traits respond to gradients of these factors, showing both diversity and individuality, which are crucial for enhancing adaptive potential and environmental sustainability. The response of these young cohorts to ecological factors reflects species-specific regeneration requirements and their ability to adapt. In Pineta sylvestris hylocomiosa forests, conditions for successful natural regeneration were found to be favorable. However, anthropogenic pressure led to a 35-55% reduction in regeneration density, decreased vitality, and cohort imbalance. The study also found that natural regeneration is more cost-effective than plantation forestry, reducing costs by 2.3-3.5 times per hectare. These findings can inform sustainable forest management and predict forest ecosystem adaptability to climate change.
Keywords: biodiversity; ecosystems; natural regeneration; integrated population analysis; population structure; mathematical modelling.
