Richness and rarity patterns in rupestrian complexes: evidence for the conservation of the Serra do Espinhaço Biosphere Reserve
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to describe the floristic patterns, conservation status, endemism, and degree of rarity of shrub and tree species in a Rupestrian Complex in the Espinhaço Range, in Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The methodology involved floristic surveys using random walks and the collection of herbarium specimens, in addition to the use of the database from the Jeanine Felfili Dendrological Herbarium/UFVJM. Rarity analysis followed Rabinowitz’s methodology, based on the quantification of geographic distribution, habitat specificity, and population size to categorize species. Data were processed using descriptive statistics to determine proportions of species richness, endemism, and rarity patterns within the community. A total of 144 species from 14 families were identified, with Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Myrtaceae, and Melastomataceae predominating, representing 52.77% of the studied flora. Notably, 55.5% of the species were classified as rare and 44.44% as common. The high level of endemism revealed that 73% of the species are endemic to Brazil, 20% are restricted to rupestrian grasslands, and 80% also occur in other Cerrado phytophysiognomies. The results indicate high species richness and beta diversity, reinforcing the importance of conserving these areas. However, the vulnerability of the area may be underestimated due to the lack of conservation status information for 64,6% of the species, highlighting the need for conservation practices and further studies to better assess biodiversity and floristic composition.
