Abstract

This study analyzed the quality of commercial-brand pine wood shavings and proposed the development of a differentiated product for hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) breeding. Thus, the quality of commercial wood shavings was evaluated based on granulometry, moisture content and sanitary conditions. Due to the lack of standardization, sterilized, colored, and scented wood shavings are being developed. To verify the effect of sterilization, two methods were compared (autoclave and oven). Powdered food dyes were used to color the wood shavings. After dyeing, the material was air-dried and sterilized in an oven. Color and aroma preference tests were carried out using 20 sexed hamsters, and changes in food and water consumption were observed in the aroma test (characteristic of stress in the animals). Then, two systems of five coupled cages were set up for the color preference test; each system contained 10 sexed hamsters for 7 days, accompanied by video monitoring. There was growth of fungi in all evaluated commercial brands. It was found that there was no change in the behavior of the hamsters, in terms of particle size and color of shavings, which could be a market differentiator.  Scenting alters animal behavior and is not recommended.
