IN SITU IDENTIFICATION OF Commiphora leptophloeos (MART.) J. B. GILLETT: AN APPLIED DENDROLOGICAL APPROACH

The vegetation of the Caatinga is diverse, and correct dendrological identification is important for forestry activities. Thus, this research aimed to describe the dendrological characteristics of Commiphora leptophloeos found in a Caatinga fragment. For this, 20 adult individuals were georeferenced in Patos-PB, and the dendrological and morphobiometric characteristics of the reproductive structures were evaluated. The species has a globose and deciduous crown, a tortuous and cylindrical bole, with an average height of 5.2 m and a DBH of 27 cm (deq). The rhytidome has a grayish-orange color, is smooth, and detaches in irregular and thin sheets; the living bark is green in color, with lenticels and gummy latex. The leaves are compound (3–11 leaflets) and petiolate, with leaflets of an elliptical shape, green color, and the presence of trichomes. The flowers are inconspicuous (6×2 mm), complete, bisexual, cruciferous, and green-yellow-reddish in color. The fruit is of the phylotrimidium type, green, and ovoid-rounded (1.79×1.49×1.51 cm); the mesocarp is green, but at the apex of the endocarp, it varies to reddish, forming the aril; and the endocarp (pyrene) is black, rigid, and ovoid, covering a light beige, also ovoid seed. It is concluded that the dendrological aspects of the dead bark (rhytidome) and the fruit (pyrene) are diagnostic macromorphological characters that can assist in the field identification of C. leptophloeos.
