Abstract

This study aimed to map academic output regarding folk and popular dances across fourteen Physical Education journals between 1979 and 2024. It is a quantitative-qualitative bibliographic study firmly grounded in the principles of Cultural Studies. Seventeen articles distributed across seven journals were identified, with a predominance of critical approaches that view dance as a sociocultural and identity-related phenomenon. Although the initial research focus was directed toward the North, Northeast, and Central-West regions (aligned with the journal JOPEQAL), the studies found showed a stronger connection to the Southeast, Northeast, and Central-West. A clear growth in scientific output was observed in these geographic areas, driven by research originating in the state of Goiás, particularly regarding themes such as Congada, Catira, Bumba-meu-boi, and Frevo. The study concludes that this landscape represents an advance over earlier, nascent research; however, the absolute silence regarding the North region with no publications analyzed is evident.
