Ecocídio e Direitos Humanos: O que está acontecendo com o Pantanal?

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the evolution of the concept of the crime of Ecocide, the challenges for its international criminalization, as well as the need for an integrated approach to environmental preservation, with a focus on the Brazilian Pantanal. The research is descriptive, qualitative, and exploratory. Bibliographical and cataloging sources were used for this research. The analysis demonstrates that, despite the numerous environmental damages caused by human actions, such as deforestation, recurrent fires, indiscriminate use of pesticides, and small hydropower plants (PCHs), the concept of ecocide still lacks international consensus, as well as its criminalization, particularly with the inclusion of a climatic reference. Furthermore, it is necessary to formulate a specific law for the protection of the Pantanal, considering its particularities, seeking the harmonization of national and international laws that recognize humans as part of nature, based on a global effort for continuous awareness and preservation, ensuring a healthy environment for present and future generations.
