The place and the city in the teaching of Geography: The perception of students from Guarantã do Norte-MT

Abstract

The present paper aims to promote a reflection on how the city's teaching practice has been in the Geography subject, based on the perception of students from the ninth grade of Elementary School at Estrelinha do Norte School and in the third grade of High School at Albert Einstein State School, placed in Guarantã do Norte - MT. Based on the principles of phenomenology and making use of structured interviews, we seek to analyze in the qualitative form, the perception that students have in relation to their city, to Geography subject and its practice, focusing on the student's places of experience. It was found that students identify with the city and with the Geography subject, however, although references are found between global, national and local scales during classes and most of students want to learn more about their municipality, the issues inherent to the city and the places in the city are not protagonists in the practice of Geography classes in the analyzed schools.
