Abstract

From the XX century, with the modernization process of Brazilian agriculture, the Cerrado became a central feature for the expansion of science and technology in the realm of agricultural activities. This territory biome recognized a new dynamic in terms of exploring the economic potential of its natural resources and socio-spatial organization, triggering several changes and impacts of a socio-environmental nature. In this research, the objective was to analyze and discuss some impacts and changes in the domains of the Cerrado of Mato Grosso, taking as study area the municipality of Primavera do Leste, located in a region considered to be the irradiating nucleus of grain production in the state of Mato Grosso. The results show that in this municipality the expansion of agricultural activities, especially modern agriculture, is directly related to the disappearance of the Cerrado, with a loss rate of approximately 43% (1985-1997), 32% (1997-2009) and 1 % (2009-2019). There was also a strong relationship between the strengthening of commodity-producing monocultures and the disappearance of other cultures in the municipality's economic diversification.
