Abstract

Agroecology is a type of resistance of the small farmer to the hegemonic model of agricultural production.  This model of agricultural practice is based on the use of ecology and its concepts to guide the formulation of sustainable agroecosystems. From its adoption, places of resistance to the conventional model emerge. The examples of these places of resistance are innumerable, where previously precarious and decadent rural spaces have been transformed into niches of socioeconomic prosperity with less inequality. The work carried out aimed to demonstrate that the practice of agroecology developed in the rural settlement "Florestan Fernandes" in São José dos Quatro Marcos, in the state of Mato Grosso is an example of the aforementioned resistance to agricultural production that imposes itself as a hegemonic model. The methodology adopted consisted of: bibliographic review, interviews, and photographic records made during field research when the settlers' agricultural practices and experiences were also observed. It was demonstrated by the research that the agro-ecological production model practiced in the settlement permits the constitution of a space of cultural and environmental valorization and solidary economy, where the producer coexists harmoniously with nature, having the land as the synonym of life and source of his "good life", thus there is the guarantee of environmental sustainability concomitant to the quality of life of the individuals.
