The research carried out in the municipality of Caetanos, BA, highlights the importance of cacti for the local population, showing the deep connection between these plants and the sertanejos. Cactaceae play a crucial role, being used for both human and animal food, especially during periods of drought, as well as serving as living fences and ornamentation. The research highlights how the utilitarian knowledge of these plants is crucial for survival in the semi-arid region, demonstrating the local flora's ability to adapt to the semi-arid climate. Species such as Opuntia ficus-indica and Melocactus are widely cultivated and appreciated, contributing significantly to the food and economic security of communities. The resilience of cacti in the face of climatic adversity, with their morphological adaptations, such as the transformation of leaves into thorns, exemplifies the adaptability of the Caatinga biome. This study not only highlights the ecological importance of cacti, but also promotes recognition of their cultural and economic value. It concludes that the harmonious interaction between man and the environment, mediated by the use of cactaceae, is fundamental for the sustainability of the region, contributing to the management and preservation of local natural resources.
