UM REI BELGA CONTRA UM CÔNSUL BRITÂNICO EM KING LEOPOLD’S SOLILOQUY: A DEFENSE OF HIS CONGO RULE, DE MARK TWAIN

Resumo

RESUMO: King Leopold’s soliloquy: a defense of his Congo rule foi escritopelo norte-americano Mark Twain e publicado em 1905. No presenteartigo, propomos-nos a buscar no texto literário referências aoencontro do cônsul inglês Roger Casement com o poderoso monarcabelga e verificar até que ponto pode ser considerado um exemplo deliteratura panfletária usada como denúncia a sua administração do EstadoLivre do Congo, durante o final do século XIX e início do XX. Por fim,pretendemos investigar as consequências desse encontro entre o rei e ocônsul para a economia de exploração da borracha naquele local.

ABSTRACT: King Leopold’s soliloquy: a defense of his Congo rule,authored by the North-American writer Mark Twain, was first publishedin 1905. The aim of this paper is to search the literary text for referencesto the intersections between Roger Casement and the powerful Belgianmonarch Leopold II in order to verify the extent of Twain’s interventionand how it should be considered as an example of pamphlet literatureused as a weapon of denunciation against the administration of the CongoFree State. Lastly, we intend to reflect upon the consequences of thepropaganda war between the Belgian King and the British Consul fortruth regarding the violence underlying rubber extraction.
