NÃO SE FAZ NEGRO, TORNA-SE NEGRO: O PROCESSO DE IDENTIDADE NEGRA EM EVERY LIGHT IN THE HOUSE BURNIN’, DE ANDREA LEVY

Resumo

RESUMO: Analisam-se o conceito da identidade negra e suas vicissitudesno romance Every light in the house burnin’, de Andrea Levy, nocontexto da literatura negra britânica, a qual se tornou um fator relevantena cultura britânica nos últimos cinquenta anos. Levy e os autores‘negros’ britânicos estão construindo uma memória coletiva diante dosfatos históricos da escravidão e diante da diáspora africano-caribenhaque está consolidando o Reino Unido como um país multirracial emulticultural. Investiga-se, portanto, as estratégias de desmemorização,estranhamento, enfrentamento e superação, que a protagonista vivenciapara que sua identidade ‘negra’ se torne visível num contexto hegemônicobranco.

ABSTRACT: The concept of Negro identity and its vicissitudes in AndreaLevy’s Every light in the house burnin’ are analyzed within the contextof Black British Literature, which has become an important relevantfactor in British culture during the last fifty years. Levy and other BlackBritish authors have been building a collective memory in the wake ofthe historical events of slavery and the African-Caribbean diaspora thatis consolidating the United Kingdom as a multiracial and multiculturalcountry. Consequently, strategies of de-memorizing, uncanniness,opposition and resilience that the character experiences so that her Negroidentity may become visible within the white hegemonic contextare investigated.
